I was wondering if Johnston told Gail about what he heard of the conversation between Jake and Heather by the Roadrunner in Black Jack. Then I got the first line of this and had to write the rest.
Fool For Love
“Do you know what kind of idiot we raised for a son?”
Gail felt her husband’s question rumble in his chest as she lay pressed against him, trying not to think about what might happen when he made the trip to Black Jack Fairgrounds the next day.
She hugged him more tightly. “Which one?”
“Jake. Lets a girl kiss him, and then doesn’t talk to her for a month.”
Gail tipped her head back. “Which girl?”
“Heather Lisinski.” In the near-darkness, she saw Johnston shake his head. “Boy’s a damn fool to let a nice girl like that get away….”

I always got the impression Johnston liked Emily as a person well enough but thought she was a really bad influence on Jake and not the girl Jake should be with long term, so yeah, he wasn't happy about them looking like they were getting back together. (Especially since that nice Heather Lisinski is now around, and she'd be so much better for Jake....)

Date: 2009-07-29 12:04 am (UTC)Based on comments that TPTB made at the time, I firmly believe the Johnston was supposed to die in the second season instead of Bonnie (because the entire town would have exploded/rallied/rebelled because of his murder, much more than for Bonnie). And I agree that his death was necessary in order for Jake to come into his own (well, sorta-kinda, since they could have done a pretty interesting story of the "passing of the torch" (or, in Johnston's case, the "torches").

*nods* - yeah, that's the impression I got, too. There are certain people whose "karmas" or personalities, or whatever it is just...aren't healthy for each other, and I think that's very true of Jake and Emily. Although the only person who seemed to really see and understand that was Johnston.
